More Day Care Workers Test Positive for COVID-19 at Kanawha Drive-Up Clinics

In May 2020, West Virginia began to reopen, and the governor ordered COVID-19 testing for all day care workers. The county health department began to test day care workers at its drive-up clinics, and several tested positive.

  • May 6, 2020: officials reported that four day care workers tested positive. They were among more than 200 people tested at the weekend drive-up clinics. Each worked at a different center. Two of the centers had been closed during the pandemic. The two open centers sent children home and planned to clean and test staff before reopening. The first four workers had no symptoms.
  • May 9, 2020: WV MetroNews reported two more positive day care workers from the drive-up testing, for a total of six. WOAY reported that three of the six worked at centers that had been closed, and three worked at open centers.

Families were told to tell their children’s doctors about a possible exposure. Day care workers could make a testing appointment through the health department’s coronavirus hotline, 304-348-1088. More drive-up events followed, including one at West Virginia State University on May 13, 2020, where day care workers were encouraged to come.
