In May 2020, the county health department and the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority (KCEAA) set up two more drive-up COVID-19 testing events, in Montgomery and in Institute.
The events
- Monday, May 11, 2020: a four-hour drive-through session near Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montgomery. Montgomery sits on the line between Kanawha and Fayette counties.
- Wednesday, May 13, 2020, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: a drive-up event in the parking lot of the Wilson University Union on the West Virginia State University campus in Institute.
Day care workers were encouraged to make an appointment, even without symptoms. People with symptoms such as cough, fever, shortness of breath or stomach and bowel problems were also urged to book a test. Appointments were made through the health department’s COVID-19 hotline at 304-348-1088.
Results
The Institute event drew 214 people, a record for a single site up to that time. The Montgomery event tested 68 people, and 83 people were tested at the Schoenbaum Center in Charleston the same week. In all, 365 people were tested at the three sites. The county health officer said she was glad that members of the minority community used the drive-up clinics.
