In the spring of 2020, the health department and the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority (KCEAA) ran a series of drive-up COVID-19 testing events across Kanawha County. The first one, at KCEAA in Charleston on April 21, 2020, tested 26 people. The two agencies said more events would follow.
The second event took place on April 28 at Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary School. A third was set for Friday, May 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bible Center Church in Charleston. Day care workers were asked to come for a test even if they had no symptoms.
More events followed in May. On May 13, the agencies tested 214 people at West Virginia State University in Institute, the largest turnout at one site up to that time. Events at Elkview Baptist Church on May 19 and First Baptist Church in Charleston on May 21 were next, both from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Appointments were made through the health department’s COVID-19 hotline. See also Twenty-six tested during drive-up COVID-19 testing event and Drive-up COVID-19 testing at Elkview Baptist Church.
