Free COVID-19 testing took place at West Virginia State University (WVSU) in Institute on Friday, September 18, and Saturday, September 19, 2020. Testing ran from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days in Parking Lot C, across from Wallace Hall and Ferrell Hall.
The state Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs led the event. Partners were WVSU Extension, the state health department, the West Virginia National Guard and the county health department. The testing was part of the work of the governor’s COVID-19 Advisory Commission on African American Disparities. It aimed at counties with large minority populations and signs of COVID-19 spread.
- All residents could get a test, including people without symptoms.
- No proof of insurance was needed.
- People were asked to bring identification, such as a driver’s license or proof of address.
- Anyone under 18 had to come with a parent or legal guardian.
Earlier testing at WVSU
On Wednesday, May 13, 2020, the county health department and the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority held a drive-up testing event in the parking lot of the Wilson University Union on the WVSU campus, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A total of 214 people got a test. Health leaders called it a record turnout for a single location at that time.
