Free HIV testing on Charleston’s East End was a repeat stop in the 2021 outreach series. The county health department and community partners ran the series during the HIV outbreak in Kanawha County.
The East End events were held outdoors, often in a vacant lot, and ran from noon into the afternoon. See HIV testing on Charleston’s East End. Earlier East End dates included June 1, 2021 and June 22, 2021.
In May 2021, health officials reported 11 new HIV cases in the county so far that year, eight of them tied to injection drug use, and 60 cases since 2018. The health department gave an average of 14 HIV tests a day at its public outreach events.
Testing at these events was free and came with linkage to care. The same stops offered COVID-19 testing and vaccines and shots for hepatitis A, hepatitis B and tetanus. People could also call the health department at 304-348-8080 to book an HIV test.
