Free Flu Vaccines at Kanawha County High Schools

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the county health department held free one-day flu vaccine clinics at Kanawha County high schools. The goal was to keep flu and COVID-19 from spreading at the same time. Health officials called this a “twindemic.”

Saturday, November 7, 2020

Drive-thru flu vaccine clinics ran from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at eight high school sites: Capital, George Washington, Herbert Hoover, Nitro, Riverside, St. Albans, Sissonville and South Charleston. The Herbert Hoover clinic was held at the site of the former school on Elk River Road North in Elkview. The health department ran the clinics with Kanawha County Schools and other local partners. Students, school staff and families could come. Students had to come with a parent or guardian. High-dose flu vaccine was not offered.

Saturday, October 16, 2021: Arms Across Kanawha

The “Arms Across Kanawha” event ran from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at eight sites, most of them high schools: Capital, George Washington, Nitro, Riverside, St. Albans, Sissonville and South Charleston. In September 2021 the health department said the Herbert Hoover site would move to Coonskin Park. On the day of the event, news reports listed Elkview Baptist Church as the eighth site. People could get a flu shot and a COVID-19 vaccine in the same visit. A grant from the Kanawha County Commission paid for the flu shots. Staff gave 1,393 flu shots and 213 COVID-19 vaccines that day.
