COVID-19 at George Washington High School

George Washington High School, Charleston, WV

In late September 2020 the county health department and the West Virginia National Guard held drive-up COVID-19 testing in the parking lot of George Washington High School in Charleston. The event was part of a push to add free testing in Kanawha County, which the state then listed as an “orange” county.

A WCHS-TV report on September 27, 2020 listed the hours for the school site that week:

  • Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Thursday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The same week, free testing also took place at South Charleston High School on Thursday and at Riverside High School on Friday, both from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

WCHS-TV reported on September 30, 2020 that the testing on Tuesday at George Washington High School reached 361 people. Staff also gave 141 flu shots there. The county health officer said that early in the pandemic the health department once had only 10 tests to hand out.
