Community COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic

Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center, 200 Civic Center Drive, Charleston, WV

In early 2021, the county health department and the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority held a series of community COVID-19 vaccine clinics. Most took place on Saturdays at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.

The early clinics

  • January 2021: the clinics were for people 65 and older and for first responders. They were by appointment only, and people booked by phone through a call center. Slots filled within hours.
  • Saturday, January 23, 2021: 3,870 people got a vaccine, the largest one-day total in the county to that date.
  • Saturday, February 13, 2021: a record 5,344 doses were given, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Partners included the City of Charleston, the Kanawha County Commission, CAMC, Thomas Health, West Virginia Health Right, FamilyCare, the University of Charleston and the West Virginia National Guard. As supply grew, the clinics opened to more age groups. The weekly Coliseum clinics paused after April 24, 2021, and the health department moved to smaller clinics in communities.
