During the COVID-19 pandemic, back-to-school shots at the health department clinic were given by appointment only, so that the clinic could space out visits.
West Virginia requires these vaccines for school:
- Children entering a West Virginia school for the first time (any grade): diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox and hepatitis B.
- 7th grade: one Tdap dose and one meningococcal dose.
- 12th grade: one Tdap dose, and a second meningococcal dose if the first was given before age 16.

School vaccine rules, including exemptions, have changed since then and are the subject of court cases. Check the current rules with the state or your child’s school.
