In June 2020, the county health department and the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority announced free drive-up COVID-19 testing events in St. Albans and Cross Lanes, two communities in western Kanawha County. The events were part of a series of community testing stops held as West Virginia began to reopen.
On June 10, 2020, WOWK reported on the drive-up event at Perrow Presbyterian Church in Cross Lanes. More than 100 people were tested there. By then, local public health staff had tested close to 3,500 people at their drive-up sites. Health officials said they had plenty of tests, so people should not hesitate to come.
Officials saw a small rise in positive results at the last few events. They linked it to Memorial Day and the reopening two weeks earlier. The next free event was set for Friday and Saturday, June 12 and 13, 2020, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at University of Charleston Stadium at Laidley Field.
