Those Who Need a Second Pfizer Vaccine Dose Asked to Call the Health Department

In early 2021, the county health department and the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority gave COVID-19 vaccines at large clinics at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. The Pfizer vaccine needed two doses. The second dose was due 21 days after the first. The Moderna vaccine needed a second dose 28 days after the first.

How second doses were scheduled

The health department called people to schedule their second dose. News reports from February and March 2021 gave these instructions:

  • For the Saturday, February 13, 2021 clinic: people who got a first Pfizer dose from the health department from January 18 to 23 came to that clinic for the second dose. People 65 and older who got a call came at the time they were given. People 65 and older who did not get a call came at the same time as their first-dose appointment.
  • Health care workers who got a Pfizer shot at the Coliseum on January 22 scheduled their second dose through the CDC’s Vaccine Administration Management System.
  • For the Saturday, March 6, 2021 clinic: people who got a first Pfizer dose from the health department from February 8 to 12 should have had a call to schedule the second dose. People in that group who did not get a call were asked to come to the clinic for their second dose.

Second doses at these clinics were only for people whose first dose came from the health department.
