the board of health is seeking a physician to serve as executive director/health officer for the health department located in Charleston, West Virginia. The Health Department is responsible for public health services in Kanawha County and has a contractual relationship to provide services in adjoining Putnam County (total population of 240,000 people in a 1,200 square mile area). The position requires an individual who is a physician, has at least five (5) years of public health experience, a Masters in Public Health, and is eligible for a license to practice medicine in West Virginia. Preference is given to specialists certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
The Department employs a staff of 35 and has an annual budget of $3.4 million. Salary is commensurate with experience. The range is $105,612-$189,096. Outstanding medical, dental and vision plans, as well as an excellent retirement program.
Description: Manages activities and operations within the health department, including providing direction for programs involving physical health, environmental health, and planning and evaluation. Supervises assigned staff, including assessing program results, addressing employee concerns, counseling and disciplining employees, and evaluating work performance. Responsible for the departmental budget, monitors expenditures, and analyzes costs. Serves as executive secretary for the Board of Health and implements policies and procedures established by the Board. Identifies county health program needs and develops and changes programs to meet projected needs. Develops policies, regulations, and procedures to ensure the protection of public health. Coordinates health programs and services with other county departments, governmental agencies, and community stakeholders. Prepares articles on health care issues and concerns for publication in professional journals.
