At its meeting on March 2, 2022, the county board of health created a new award for outstanding public health leadership. The board named the award for a former health officer and executive director of the county health department. At that time, he was director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.
About the award
- The first award went to a former board of health member, after his death. He had also been cabinet secretary of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
- The board said it would present the first award to his family at a later date.
- A plaque in the lobby of the health department was to honor each year’s winner.
Later news reports said the award was presented in August 2022, and called it a public health merit award.
