On Thursday, April 16, 2020, health officials confirmed that nine more patients at Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center tested positive for COVID-19. The long-term care home is on MacCorkle Avenue in Jefferson, in Kanawha County.
Testing at the home started after one patient went to the hospital with COVID-19 on April 14, and other residents had symptoms. On Wednesday, April 15, the West Virginia National Guard tested all 75 patients there. The county health department and the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority helped. Staff were also tested. At first, the home’s cases were not added to the county count while health staff were still on site.
On Friday, April 17, six more cases brought the total to 16 patients. Two were in the hospital, and 14 were recovering at the home. Kanawha County reported 18 new cases that day, its largest one-day rise up to that time.
