About 2,500 people received COVID-19 vaccines at one of the Saturday community clinics that the county health department and the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority held in the spring of 2021.
The weekly clinics took place at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. They were a partnership with the City of Charleston, the Kanawha County Commission, CAMC, Thomas Health Systems, West Virginia Health Right, FamilyCare, the University of Charleston and the West Virginia National Guard. People with appointments for second doses got a call, and drive-through shots were given on the Coliseum’s Lee Street lot.
Eligibility widened over the spring. In March, new doses went to people 50 and older, education workers ages 40 to 50, and people 16 and older with certain medical conditions. By April, anyone 16 and older could get an appointment. The last weekly large-scale clinic at the Coliseum was held on April 24, 2021.
