On Sunday, September 13, 2020, the county health department reported the largest one-day increase in new COVID-19 cases in Kanawha County up to that time. It also reported four more deaths from COVID-19.

Of the new cases, 70 came from community spread. The county had 700 active cases. The four deaths brought the county total to 54. At the time of the report, the four deaths were not yet in the official state figures.

The health officer said, “We mourn the loss of life caused by this pandemic.” The health officer asked residents to keep taking precautions:

  • Wear a mask.
  • Stay home when sick.
  • Wash hands often.
  • Keep six feet from other people.

Kanawha County was close to the red level on the state COVID-19 alert map. Only Monongalia County was red at that time. The county’s 7-day rolling average was 21.65 new cases, up by five in one week. A county moved to red at an average of 25.

Two weeks earlier, three deaths on one day had set a county record. See Kanawha records highest one-day COVID-19 death toll. In November 2020, the county set a new one-day record with 134 cases. See Kanawha County Sees Largest One-Day Increase in COVID Cases.
