On August 7, 2017, CDC issued Health Alert Network advisory HAN-00405 on a rise in Cyclospora infections.
As of August 2, 2017, CDC counted 206 cases from 27 states in people who became ill on or after May 1. Eighteen people were hospitalized and no deaths were reported. By the same point in 2016, 88 cases had been reported. No single food had been identified.
The main symptom is watery diarrhea. Others are loss of appetite, tiredness, weight loss, cramps, nausea and gas. Illness starts about one week after exposure and can come back.
Routine stool tests usually do not find Cyclospora, so the test must be ordered by name. CDC named trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole as the treatment of choice.
This guidance is from August 2017. It is kept here as a record and is not current advice. Check current guidance from the CDC or your doctor.
