On June 14, 2018, the county health department confirmed hepatitis A in two more food service workers. The cases were part of a hepatitis A outbreak in Kanawha and Putnam counties that spring.
One worker was at the Taco Bell at 4152 WV-34 in Hurricane, in Putnam County. That worker could have spread the virus from May 19 to June 12. The other was at the Pizza Hut at 5730 MacCorkle Avenue in Charleston, with a possible window of May 26 to June 11. Spread could only have happened while the workers were on the job.
Inspectors found no unsafe food handling at either restaurant, and the health department said the risk to customers was extremely low. Family members and coworkers got the hepatitis A vaccine as a precaution. Customers who ate or drank at either place were asked to watch for symptoms such as stomach pain, dark urine, tiredness, fever, yellow skin or eyes, pale stools, loss of appetite, and nausea or vomiting.
