On September 24, 2021, the CDC endorsed a booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for certain groups. West Virginia shared the news with providers and partners as state Health Advisory #180.
The booster was for people who had finished the two-dose Pfizer primary series at least six months earlier. The CDC said these groups should get one:
- People 65 and older
- Residents of long-term care settings
- People 50 to 64 with underlying medical conditions
The CDC said these groups may get one, based on their own benefits and risks:
- People 18 to 49 with underlying medical conditions
- People 18 to 64 at higher risk of exposure because of their job or where they live
At that time the booster advice did not apply to people who got the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Later advisories widened booster eligibility and shortened the waiting time.
