In 2020, the county health department and the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority held free drive-up COVID-19 testing events at sites across Kanawha County. Nitro, in the western part of the county, was one of the testing locations.
The fourth community drive-up event took place at Nitro High School on Wednesday, May 6, 2020. About 105 people signed up to be tested. Testing was open to the public, and day care workers were strongly encouraged to come. The health department had tested more than 500 people in the week before, with few positive results. The next event was set for the following Wednesday in Institute.
Nitro High School hosted drive-up testing again in September 2020, when flu shots were also offered. See the May 2020 Nitro testing event, free COVID-19 testing at Nitro High School, 503 tested at the Nitro drive-up event and the event locations list.
