COVID-19 Vaccine Booster

In the fall of 2021, COVID-19 booster shots became available to certain groups. On September 24, 2021, the CDC recommended a Pfizer booster for older adults, people in long-term care, people with certain medical conditions, and adults at high risk from exposure at work or where they live. The booster was given at least six months after the second dose.

Before then, the county health officer explained the difference between a third dose and a booster. A third dose was for people with weak immune systems. A booster was meant to strengthen protection for the general public. Both used the same vaccine as the first shots.

By late October 2021, about 75 percent of Kanawha County residents had their first shot. The county health officer invited anyone due for a first, second or booster shot to come to the health department.

In November 2021, boosters opened to all adults. See COVID-19 vaccine booster available to all 18 or older.
