In early August 2020, a COVID-19 case was found at the YWCA Sojourner’s Shelter in Charleston. The YWCA learned of a positive test on Tuesday, August 4, 2020. The case reported in the news was a client of the shelter. The facility had gone five months without a positive case.
West Virginia Health Right tested all staff and clients at the shelter. The client who tested positive stayed in a hotel for a 14-day quarantine, with meals and other needs provided. Residents stayed in the shelter until the test results came back, and the shelter admitted no new clients during that time.
Sojourner’s Shelter is in the 1400 block of Washington Street East. It gives emergency shelter and support to homeless single women, women with children, and men who have custody of their children, as well as intact families.
Group living settings had several COVID-19 cases in Kanawha County in 2020. See Charleston Gardens testing and Eastbrook Center testing.
