On October 24, 2017, CDC issued Health Alert Network advisory HAN-00408. It covered patients in, or back from, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands after Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Damaged water systems and poor access to safe water, food and shelter raised the risk of disease outbreaks. CDC asked clinicians to watch for six diseases: leptospirosis, dengue, hepatitis A, typhoid fever, vibriosis and influenza.
Clinicians on the US mainland were asked to take a travel history for the past 4 weeks. The guidance applied from September 2017 through March 2018. For suspected leptospirosis, CDC advised starting treatment before test results came back.
This guidance is from October 2017. It is kept here as a record and is not current advice. Check current guidance from the CDC or your doctor.
