West Virginia Day Holiday

All Day

West Virginia Day is a state legal holiday on June 20. It marks the day in 1863 when West Virginia became a state. The state legislature gave the day formal recognition in 1927.

State law lists West Virginia Day among the legal holidays. When June 20 falls on a Saturday, the Friday before is the legal holiday. When it falls on a Sunday, the Monday after is the legal holiday.

The day is often marked with events at the state capitol complex in Charleston and in other towns. The health department calendar listed its office as closed for the state holiday in 2019. See West Virginia Day, June 20, 2019 and the calendar.
