From Sunday night, August 14, into Monday morning, August 15, 2022, a flash flood hit eastern Kanawha County. Up to 6 inches of rain fell in a short time. The flood hit areas along U.S. Route 60, including Kelleys Creek and Campbells Creek. More than 100 homes were damaged in the Campbells Creek area. Along Hughes Creek Road, the water pulled apart at least two bridges. The governor declared a state of emergency in Kanawha and Fayette counties.
Free tetanus shots
The county health department gave free tetanus shots to flood victims and cleanup workers:
- Health department staff gave shots in a church parking lot at 187 Point Lick Drive. By Thursday, August 18, 2022, they had given 85 shots over two days.
- On Friday, August 19, 2022, the mobile unit gave free tetanus shots from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cedar Grove Fire Department on East George Street.
The vaccine supply was limited, and shots were first come, first served. See also flood water exposure and the Tdap vaccine and the flood safety page.
