On Wednesday, July 8, 2020, the county health department and the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority tested 717 people for COVID-19 at a drive-up event at the health department office on Lee Street in Charleston.
The line of cars stretched for blocks that morning. The same day, the health department reported 19 new cases from Tuesday, the largest one-day total up to that time. The county had 86 active cases that evening.
The agencies worked with the City of Charleston to reroute traffic, and the wait was about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes. The county health officer said summer travel to hot spots had brought more cases back to the county. She urged people to wear a face covering, stay six feet apart and wash their hands often.
