This Health Advisory serves as a reminder to all healthcare providers and laboratorians to report outbreaks, communicable diseases, and unusual conditions or emerging infectious diseases during the National Boy Scout Jamboree as required by the West Virginia Legislative Rule for Reportable Diseases, Events and Conditions (64CSR7). West Virginia will host the 2017 National Boy Scout Jamboree from July 19-28, 2017 at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in Mount Hope, West Virginia. The 2017 National Boy Scout Jamboree is anticipated to be the largest mass gathering in the State’s history with over 40,000 scouts and staff from all over the United States and nearly 1,000 international scouts from over 80 different countries. The event is expected to bring an increased number of visitors to Fayette County and the surrounding areas. Additionally, scouts and thousands of additional youth and volunteers will be performing an estimated 500,000 hours of community service in all 55 West Virginia counties.
The West Virginia Bureau for Public Health is working with the Boy Scouts of America to track and monitor reports of illness, injury or disease. Outbreak detection and response activities will be enhanced over the course of the event.
