Health education is any combination of learning experiences designed to help individuals and communities improve their health, by increasing their knowledge or influencing their attitudes.
Prevention & Wellness
The Division of Prevention & Wellness (DPW), previously the Division of Health Promotion, was formed in May 2007 to establish wellness activities for the residents of Kanawha County and the City of Charleston. The DPW plans, implements and evaluates policies, strategies and initiatives to promote healthy lifestyles that is supported by evidence based knowledge of prevention and wellness theories.
KCHD serves on various boards, coalitions, advisory panels and teams to further enhance the health of our residents while coordinating program activities with professional and lay groups interested in making communities healthier.
The DPW works with legislators and other public officials for increased recognition of preventative and wellness issues including policy and environmental changes, which have a positive impact on the health of our community.
Physical Activity and Nutrition
Regular physical activity helps improve your overall health and fitness, and reduces your risk for many chronic diseases, helps control weight, and strengthens muscles, bones and joints. Fitting regular exercise into your daily schedule may seem difficult at first, but the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans are more flexible than ever, giving you the freedom to reach your physical activity goals through different types and amounts of activities each week. It’s easier than you think!
Proper nutrition is critical to good health. Priorities from the CDC to improve nutrition include increasing access to healthy foods and beverages and promoting adoption of the Food Service Guidelines or other nutrition standards.
