Dr. Michael Brumage, MD, MPH, FACP
Executive Director/Health Officer

 
            Michael R. Brumage, MD, MPH, FACP, is executive director and health officer of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department. He began his duties with KCHD on Aug. 03, 2015. Brumage, a Fairmont native and graduate of West Virginia University and the WVU School of Medicine, received a master’s degree in public health from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.
 
            Most recently, Brumage served as deputy commander of the BG Crawford F. Sams U. S. Army Health Clinic Camp in Camp Zama, Japan. He is an assistant clinical professor at the WVU School of Medicine, Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry, and is an adjunct faculty member in the WVU School of Public Health, Department of Social Work and Behavioral Sciences.  He also serves as a consultant to the WVU athletic department on mindfulness-based performance enhancement.
 
            Brumage endorses innovative approaches to solve problems in an atmosphere where employees are polite to their colleagues and their patients and have the tools they need to do their jobs effectively.
 
            During his military career, Brumage was involved in a number of projects dealing with a variety of issues familiar to the local public health community including implementing a pandemic influenza plan, dealing with major natural disasters and their public health implications, in his case an earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power plant meltdown; and the effective use of telemedicine.
 
            KCHD is one of the largest local health departments in the state. Besides its clinic at 108 Lee St., in Charleston, KCHD has divisions dealing with environmental health, epidemiology and threat preparedness, and health promotion and wellness. KCHD also provides all public health services for the Putnam County Board of Health. Brumage will also serve as executive director and health officer for the Putnam County Health Department.
